GIS Intern
City of Apple Valley (MN)
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The GIS intern will assist the City of Apple Valley’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team with data management, map production, and web application development. Additionally, the position will utilize high-accuracy GPS devices to collect and update data in the field.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Data Management: Edit and maintain enterprise geodatabases using ARCGIS Pro. Perform analysis and QA/QC on existing datasets. Revise existing features to more closely align with needs of Public Works division supervisors.
Field Data Collection: Utilize high-accuracy GNSS receivers to collect and update asset inventories. Perform QA/QC on collected data to ensure it is to the standard set by the Public Works GIS Coordinator.
Map Creation and Data Visualization: Create high-quality maps and graphics that support Public Works staff. Apply cartographic principals for symbology, labeling and layout design. Ensure products are compliant with federal accessibility standards.
Web GIS Development: Configure and publish web maps, dashboards, and/or experience builder applications within ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise. Assist with updating and improving existing applications and web GIS products.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited college/university/technical program in Geography, GIS, or closely related field.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, directly, honestly, respectfully, and in a professional manner with all employees, the general public, and elected officials.
Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Ability to perform physical tasks encountered during inspections at construction sites, including climbing ladders and walking over rugged terrain. Regularly required to use hand or feet to operate objects, use tools and keyboards., drive a vehicle, crawl inside manholes, and climb to heights or depths of twenty feet. Must frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to forty (40) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and GIS concepts.
Experience using Global Position Systems (GPS) equipment and Field Maps.
Ability to read/understand as-built drawings.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Position requires ability to work outdoors adverse weather conditions as directed in temperatures ranging from -10F to 100F.
Position workload may be such that, during some periods of time, activities will be hectic and stressful, and a variety of different tasks will be performed at a fast pace.

Schedule: Monday – Friday days. Seasonal: 6 months maximum
