We’re excited to invite women working in GIS across Iowa to a new networking opportunity being held in Des Moines this October.

The Iowa GIS Women’s Meetup is a casual, informal gathering designed to connect women across the geospatial profession. Whether you work for a city, county, state agency, utility, consulting firm, nonprofit, or university, we’d love to have you join us. If you are questioning if you qualify, you do!

Event Details
• Wednesday, October 28th at 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
• The New Northwestern Cocktail & Wine Bar (321 E Walnut St, Des Moines, IA 50309)
• There is ample parking around the venue, both on-street and surrounding surface lots.
• Free to attend (food and beverages available for purchase)

There’s no formal agenda and nothing to prepare—just a chance to meet fellow GIS professionals, expand your network, and connect with others in Iowa’s GIS community. Registration is free, but we do ask you to sign up so that we can give the venue a headcount, see where people are coming from, and reach you if anything changes.

Registration

Please feel free to share with any women GIS professionals who may be interested. We hope to see you there!

A special thank you to Heather Brusnahan, Holly Kluever and Rachel Murtaugh for helping me plan!

Thank you,

ISU Extension and Outreach has space available in our next Essentials of ArcGIS Pro workshop on November 12-13 in Ames, Iowa.

Many organizations have made the move from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro, while others are still working through the transition. If you’re looking to sharpen your ArcGIS Pro skills or become more comfortable using Esri’s current desktop GIS platform, this workshop is a great place to start.

This in-person, two-day workshop is geared toward GIS professionals who are new to ArcGIS Pro, occasional GIS users who want more hands-on experience, and longtime ArcMap users ready to make the switch. Training focuses on practical skills that participants can immediately apply in their organizations.

Topics include:

Getting Started with ArcGIS Pro – Learn the Pro interface, project structure, and key workflows.

Working with Data and Maps – Create and edit GIS data, apply symbology, and build professional-quality map layouts.

Essential Geoprocessing Tools – Gain experience with frequently used tools such as selections, buffers, clips, and other spatial analysis workflows.

Over the years, we’ve welcomed participants from city and county governments, utilities, regional planning organizations, state agencies, and more! Beyond the technical training, the workshop is also a great opportunity to connect with other GIS professionals and share ideas, challenges, and best practices.

When: November 12-13, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Where: ISU Economic Development Core Facility, 1805 Collaboration Place, Ames, IA 50010

Cost: $600 per registrant. Discounts are available for groups of 2 (10% off) or 3+ (15% off).
Register and learn more at:

https://www.extension.iastate.edu/communities/gis-training-and-courses

Can’t make the November session? We will also offer the workshop in January and April.

Have questions? Feel free to contact Bailey Hanson (bahanson@iastate.edu) or Jay Maxwell (jaym@iastate.edu).
