Instructions and details on the IGIC list-serv
What is a list-serv?
A list-serv is an e-mail discussion group that permits you to:
- network with colleagues
- quickly resolve problems and seek solutions
- seek advice or answers and get responses quickly
- actively participate in discussions or simply monitor news or developments
- stay involved with IGIC
How do I sign up?
To participate or subscribe, follow these simple steps:
- Address an e-mail to the list-serv computer: majordomo@iastate.edu
- In the subject box, type subscribe
- For the body of the message, type in the following information (all one line, all lower case):
subscribe igic
Once you have sent it, your list activation will be confirmed and the list will automatically send an information file to you that explains features of the list, such as how to unsubscribe. Thereafter, any time you wish to make an inquiry with all of the participants on the IGIC list, simply send an e-mail to: igic at iastate.edu
For those of you using Microsoft Outlook as your mail client and if you are having difficulties subscribing, check to make sure that you are sending the mail message in plain text format. This option can be found under the "Format" pull-down within Outlook. If that doesn't work, try leaving the subject area blank and just using the command you are trying to send in the body of the message.
To unsubscribe:
Send e-mail to majordomo@iastate.edu
Subject: unsubscribe
Body of mail: unsubscribe igic
To post Message:
post them directly to list by sending an e-mail message to igic@iastate.edu.
IGIC List Guidelines
When posting a message on the IGIC list, subscribing members should keep in mind the following general guidelines:
- The purpose of this valuable resource is to provide an open forum for the posting of announcements and discussion of news, ideas, and information relating to geospatial technologies.
- Each message should be suitable for this site and constructive as to content.
- Care should be given to the composition of each message to ensure that the announcement/request will be clearly understood by the subscribing membership.
- Always remember that your responses to questions or inquiries are posted to all members on the list. Therefore you should respond in a professional, business like manner.
- The exchange of jokes, chain letters, sports pools or other gambling activities, as well as uncomplimentary or unproductive information regarding elected officials, employees, colleagues, etc., is considered an inappropriate use of this list.
VERY IMPORTANT: remember to unsubscribe from the list before enabling the automatic response feature on your email. Otherwise you risk every list subscriber receiving hundreds of copies of your automatic response.
The IGIC list does have size limitations. It is best to keep messages as short as possible and to break up long attachments and transmit them separately or post the information to your user directory on the IGIC website and provide a link in your email to the list.
Finally, if a report is to be prepared based on responses to the list inquiry, the inquiring member is asked to share the report with the IGIC membership. At this point, the IGIC list does not have archive capabilities so it is very important that you either send a summary of findings and responses to the membership via the list or post the information to the IGIC website for all to use. This way we can keep to a minimum the number of duplicate questions asked to the list.
IGIC also has several other lists that are more issue focused and directed to specific activities of the organization. At this time, the Conference Committee, Education Committee, and Board have their own separate lists. If there is another list that you feel would serve a need to a group of the IGIC Community, please contact an
Executive Committee member with that proposal.
The IGIC list is hosted by Iowa State University. A very big thank you goes out to Iowa State University for all of their support in helping the Iowa GIS community
