The Watershed Improvement Section of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources' Environmental Services Division has an opening for a contract position (up to 18-month position) for a GIS Technician. This position will utilize GIS technologies to provide GIS services and support to various watershed and water quality projects in the Nonpoint Source Pollution Program.

LOCATION: Wallace State Office Building, Des Moines, IA

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Watershed Improvement Section of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources' Environmental Services Division has an opening for a contract position (up to 18-month position) for a GIS Technician. This position will utilize GIS technologies to provide GIS services and support to various watershed and water quality projects in the Nonpoint Source Pollution Program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies to estimate sediment delivery, gross sheet and rill erosion, land use/land cover makeup, and/or identify potential “hotspots” or problem areas for sediment and nutrients, etc. in watersheds for current and potential Nonpoint Source (NPS) projects;
  • Assessing pre- and post-project watershed conditions and quantify project successes and provide GIS information (data and/or maps) to sponsors and project coordinators of watershed projects;
  • Evaluating sediment load reductions accomplished during projects and be able to evaluate projects on a water quality basis;
  • Digitizing a variety of land use and environmental data for use in watershed and stream assessments and create and maintain associated metadata;
  • Producing maps in paper, image, and other formats for use in decision making and public education, and as necessary to effectively convey results of GIS analyses;
  • Providing basic GIS and GPS training and assistance to watershed project personnel.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation is required from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography, Environmental Sciences or other applicable field. Advanced GIS and GPS skills are also required.

SALARY RANGE: $1,488.00 - $2,244.80, bi-weekly, DOQ.
