Satellite Remote Sensing to GIS
The session is called “Satellite Remote Sensing to GIS” and it will give GIS users a simple, hands-on introduction to downloading freely available remote sensing data, loading it into a GIS, and performing simple enhancements and interpretations. We are targeting GIS users in the natural resource, land management and environmental world, though everyone is certainly welcome to attend. Space is fairly limited. We will be using ESRI’s ArcMAP in the GIS lab, along with freely available conversion tools and data viewers. We will not be using any high-end remote sensing packages – those will be covered in future courses at UNI. Sugu Ramanathan, Marc Peterson, Pete Kollasch and I will be leading the workshop. In this workshop, we will download remote sensing data from freely available Internet sources, including Landsat, Modis and Aster. While this isn’t the most high spatial resolution data available, it is cheap/free and has high repeat coverage. It is highly useful for natural resource and environmental applications. Our goal is to increase awareness of available data sources, develop cookbook procedures for loading it, and build knowledgeable users as we begin to integrate more remote sensing info into our local GIS infrastructure. SORRY - This event is now full. For future workshop information, please contact Jim Giglierano

Natural Resources Committee Meeting
Everyone is welcome to this IGIC committee meeting who has an interest in the areas of natural resources, environmental and climate data. You don’t have to be on the committee to attend (though if you’d like to join up, that would be really nice). The committee has two purposes: communication/information of what everyone else is up to; and opportunities to work together to get something done that everyone needs. The core people in the group go back before IGIC was formed, and there’s a long standing tradition of working together to create and share soils, land cover, terrain data etc. We definitely like to see new faces, whether you’re on the committee or not!
